What makes us physiologically “stressed”?
When I studied traditional herbalism prior to medical school, I was amazed by the herbs we consider “adaptogens”. These herbs can boost you up if stress is leaving you depleted and anxious or they can calm you down if stress is winding you up. In a similar way, Osteopathic treatments can interact with the nervous system to calm down the overstimulation that has become the norm. At the end of a treatment the most common experience is that people feel more relaxed. When in fact, neurologically you are! How does this work? In Osteopathic medical school we spend hours studying how the body is wired for these two nervous systems. We can access the parasympathetic nervous system through the cranium and the sacrum, which is why the term “craniosacral” was developed. There are also techniques we use can stimulate the sympathetics along the ribs when we need to open the airways (something we can thank our fight or flight system for).
How can we access and control these nervous systems?
- Do what your mother said and get some sleep!! A recommended minimum is 7-8 hours a night. If your sleep is not restorative, make an appointment to discuss this as there are supplements, medications or adjustments to your routine that can help.
- Don’t put your foot on the gas and the break at the same time! People are often oscillating between caffeine all day and alcohol or marijuana at night. We want our systems to go go go and then stop stop stop. Try finding the middle road. Boost your energy naturally through exercise in the morning. Wind down at bed with gentle stretching or meditation instead. If you aren’t ready to make a complete transition to this, try it at least two times a week. You can keep your cup of joe, but make it one and then switch to green tea if you need more of a boost. If simple changes like this does not help, make an appointment, we can talk about a stress rehab action plan.
- Get out of the habit. Plan “in fill” time. Time that is doing nothing. Carve out days or 1/2 days where the schedule is no schedule. The day can meander. Get outside in your yard, along a river or up in the mountains. Sync your body with natural rhythms and breathe fresh air. Remember that relaxing, for some, takes practice.
- If you can’t shake the feeling of stress, get help. Want to try the adaptogenic herbs that have been helping people naturally for generations? Is it time to try an Osteopathic adjustment? Is it time to try therapy with our in house marriage and family therapist Keiko Yoneyama Sims?
We can all co-exist with stress so it helps and does not harm. Tune into you. It’s time. Call us, we are always here to help.
